Fifteen-year-old Emily Muteti of Mombasa Aquatics on Saturday proved her superiority when she set four new national records during the first day of the National Age Group and Open Swimming Championship at Oshwal Academy in Mombasa.
Emily set four new records for 14-15 years, allcomers, open and the junior girls 1500 meters freestyle event when she clocked 18 minutes 37.12 seconds to better her own previous record time of 18:39.47.
She set the new national mark for the event 14 days ago during the CASA Age Group and Open Championship at Aga Khan Academy swimming pool. Emily, being coached by Abdulmalikl Abdulkarim managed to register total of 15 new national records during the CASA meeting. (READ: Muteti shatters junior records)
Another girl who starred during the first day was Danielle Awori from Nairobi who established three new records in the girls’14-15 years 100m backstroke, claiming junior, allcomers and 14-15 years records, taking 1:06.14.
Danielle broke two previous 14-15 years and junior marks of 1:06.46 being held by Achieng Ajulu-Bushell which she set in Plymouth, England on February 8, 2009.
In the same event, Danielle set an allcomers record, bettering the old time of 1:07.70 set by Talia Lanoe on October 29, 2011 at Mombasa’s Oswal Academy.
BOYS' RECORD
Nobby Obuya, a standard six pupil of Nyali primary school was another record breaker, setting the boys’ 12-13 years 100m backstroke event mark when he swam in a new time of 1:11.25.
Twelve-year-old Obuya who trains under the national coach Fakhry Mansour, broke the old record time of 1:11.53 set by David Dunford on August 31, 2002 at the St Austin Academy swimming pool.
The other record was set by Kabir Singh S Bedi of Nairobi’s Peponi School who clocked 20:18.57 which is the new national mark for the boys 10-11 years 1500m freestyle event, shattering the old mark of 21:06.41 held by Mohamed Jiwa.
