Police raided defendant’s home after tip-off that he had drugs

Dubai: A man has appeared in court over charges of possessing 1.4 grams of marijuana, after he was caught carrying the drug inside transparent nylon sacks, in-between the folds of a newspaper.

Drug enforcement officers are said to have caught the 26-year-old Bangladeshi dyer, K.A., with the drug as he was walking in Satwa on April 21.

Prosecutors accused K.A. of possessing drugs.

He pleaded not guilty before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Thursday.

The suspect contended before presiding judge Wajdi Al Menyawi that he did not consume or possess any drugs.

An Emirati anti-narcotics policeman testified that an informant told them that K.A. possessed drugs at his residence in Satwa.

“We obtained prosecutors’ permission and a drug team headed to the vicinity. As soon as we arrived near to the building where the defendant stayed, we spotted him in front of the entrance. He had a yellow bag. We apprehended him immediately. Upon having him searched, we found the drugs hidden in-between the folds of the newspaper. No [other] drugs were found on him or in his house. We took him in for questioning at Dubai Police’s anti-narcotics department,” said the policeman.

The raid took place around 11am, according to an Emirati anti-narcotics police lieutenant.

According to Dubai Police’s forensic laboratory, the defendant tested negative for drugs.

Presiding judge Al Menyawi adjourned the case to pronounce a ruling on November 17.
