MORE than 7,700 foreign tourists visited some of the country’s major tourist destinations including the world famous Serengeti National Park.
Some of the tourists entered the country through Sirari crossing post on the Tanzanian/Kenya border in September, this year.
Mr August Makala, the Immigration Department In-charge of the Sirari border crossing, says that the statistics indicate positive development. The official made the revelation in his report to the Minister for East African Cooperation, Mr Samwel Sitta, who was on a working visit in Tarime District recently.
According to Mr Makala, most of the tourists who entered Tanzania through the Sirari border crossing were on their way to the world famous Serengeti National Park to watch a variety of wild animals, including the annual wildebeest migration.
“Tourists are on the increase here at the moment as compared to the situation that prevailed in the past. Most of them come from Australia, Canada, US, the Netherlands and the UK,” the official said during a brief interview with the ‘Daily News’.
There are more than 20 tour operating companies that guide or transport tourists when entering or leaving the country via the border post, according him. The report also pointed out that improvement of the road network in Mara Region has also contributed in the development of tourism in the region especially in Western Serengeti. Some local investors have started setting up tourist hotels in various parts of the region.
