Sochi Winter Olympics flame arrives at North Pole

The flame of the Sochi Winter Olympic Games has travelled to the North Pole aboard 

a Russian nuclear-powered icebreaker.

The torch relay reached the North Pole on October 19th in a ceremony which 

involved 11 torch bearers from several countries. Russian Polar explorer Artur 

Chilingarov lit a special bowl at the North Pole sign.

The journey to the North Pole is part of the 65,000-kilometre torch relay - the longest in

 the history of the Olympics.

The flame will soon head to Saint Petersburg and then travel from the far western 

exclave of Kaliningrad to the easternmost point just across the Bering Strait from

 Alaska, before swinging back to Sochi in time for the opening ceremony on February 7th.
