Filipinos at temporary shelters in the typhoon-hit country erupted in jubilation as Manny Pacquiao beat American Brandon Rios to clinch the WBO welterweight crown in Macau.
They jumped from their seats as Pacquiao, the only boxer to win world titles in eight weight divisions, comprehensively beat his younger opponent.
Pacman, 34 suffered a controversial points loss to Timothy Bradley in June 2012 and was knocked out by Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez in December prompting talk of retiring.
But he said: “This isn’t about my comeback. Victory is a symbol of my people’s comeback from a natural disaster, a national tragedy.”
