Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni have agreed to open talks with Tanzania to address issues that threaten to divide the East African Community.

Mr Odinga and President Museveni met at State House in Entebbe during a meeting initiated by the Ugandan leader.

During the three-hour meeting, the two agreed to engage the leadership of Kenya, Rwanda and Burundi to ensure the EAC moves forward with all its members by addressing concerns of each member state.

Mr Odinga and President Museveni expressed hope that a consensus could be reached ahead of the EAC Summit that will take place in Kampala at the end of this month.

President Museveni shared Mr Odinga’s concern that a split of the regional bloc would have serious economic repercussions for Kenya and Uganda and could pose fresh security challenges in the region.

President Museveni asked Mr Odinga to seek audience with the other leaders to bridge the gap and prepare ground for talks before the Summit. Recently, Mr Odinga warned of a possible split of the EAC because Tanzania was feeling side lined.
