Ireland v Australia - International Match
Australia beat Ireland 32-15 in their match on Saturday

The Wallabies coach says players consumed "inappropriate levels of alcohol" in the lead up to Australia's clash against Ireland.

Six Australian rugby players have been suspended after a late-night drinking session.

Wingers Adam Ashley Cooper and Nick Cummins and forwards Tatafu Polota-Nau, Benn Robinson, Liam Gill and Paddy Ryan were given one-match suspensions after "inappropriate" drinking on Tuesday night.
All of the players, except Ryan, will miss this weekend’s match against Scotland.

Ryan's suspension is delayed until Australia's final Spring Tour match as International Rugby Board rules require each match-day squad to contain at least four props.

Nine other players were also "sanctioned" for breaking team rules in the lead up to Australia's 32-15 victory over Ireland last weekend.

"Everyone in our squad is required to comply with and adhere to high standards of ethical conduct both on and off the field," said Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie.

"Those standards were compromised in the lead-up to Saturday's victory over Ireland with a group of players making the decision to stay out late and consume inappropriate levels of alcohol during the early hours of Wednesday morning."

McKenzie said the disciplinary action did not result from complaints from the public.

"Let's be clear - these are internal sanctions and aren't a result of any complaints or reports of inappropriate or sinister behaviour while our players were out," he said.

Written warnings were also given to Dave Dennis, Kane Douglas, Saia Fainga'a, Bernard Foley and Nick Phipps, while Scott Fardy, Mike Harris, Ben McCalman and Nic White were verbally reprimanded.

McKenzie admits the suspensions will put the team under "significant pressure" in their match against the Dark Blues in Edinburgh, but said it was important the behaviour was dealt with.

"I am disappointed on a personal level, but firm action is the best outcome when presented with a scenario like this. You need to deal with issues to ensure everyone can be accountable for their actions," he said.
