Mandela’s remains were officially open for public viewing on Wednesday.(SABC)
Former Director General and Cabinet Secretary Reverend Frank Chikane says Mandela was an ordinary man who did extraordinary things.
Speaking on SAfm’s PM Live, Chikane says that seeing Mandela’s body at the Union Buildings brought about a strong sense of nostalgia when remembering the values and principles which Madiba stands for, even in his passing.
He says that Madiba’s silence speaks volumes, and that South Africans should reflect on whether they have carried out Madiba’s vision of transforming the country and making it a great place.
Madiba’s passing is an extraordinary moment and an event of this magnitude will never take place again, reiterating the statement that there truly is no one like him.
Ordinary citizens also expressed their joy at being part of such a colossal history making moment.
They say that they stood in the queue for hours, but happy to pay their final respects.
Many of them have travelled from as far as Venezuela.
