Bloomberg says renaming the campus will be a reminder of the mandate to give children the tools to be successful(SABC)
The Mayor of New York has announced a proposal to create the Nelson Mandela School for Social Justice.
The new high school, due to open in September 2014, will be located in what's called "The Boys and Girls High School" campus that Madiba visited in 1990, just months after his release from prison.
Mayor Bloomberg says renaming the campus in Brooklyn will forever serve as a reminder that their mandate as public servants is to provide children with the weapons they need for a successful future and help build a city of inclusion and opportunity Madiba would be proud of.
The mayor also announced that New Yorkers could further honour the legacy of the departed icon through community service this weekend through the city's comprehensive volunteer initiative.
A panel for education policy will vote on the proposal to create and rename the school next Wednesday.
