Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane says the Orlando Stadium in Soweto will be the official site of mourning for former president Nelson Mandela in Gauteng.

She was part of the African National Congress (ANC) national executive group who visited Madiba's Houghton home on Friday.

Mokonyane says that on a day to day basis there will be events happening at the stadium.

“Orlando is where Madiba used to reside, therefore Soweto is the home of Nelson Mandela. Gauteng is the home of champions and this is a champion that we really want to give a befitting send off because we believe, we are what we are because of the teachings from people like Nelson Mandela,” says the Premier.

Meanwhile, the Johannesburg Metro Police says a number of roads around the FNB Stadium will be closed to traffic ahead of the memorial service for Nelson Mandela on Tuesday. JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar has encouraged people to use public transport to the venue.

He says that the roads will be blocked off as early as Monday night. The inner cordon will be from 4am and the outer cordon from 12 midnight. Nasrec and Rand Show Roads and the Soweto Highway will be affected.

“We are expecting many heads of state to be attending the memorial service, so we want to encourage people who will be going to the service to use public transport. There will be buses functioning and also trains. The park and ride system will also be operational," explains Minnaar.
