Safaricom on Wednesday launched online payment for e-commerce.
The Lipa na M-Pesa online is a build-up on mobile money for purchase of goods and services. Chief executive Bob Collymore said the new service will ease shopping for customers and merchants.
“The entry of M-Pesa online will see more than 18 million Kenyans using the service gain access to online shopping as entrepreneurs or as customers,” he said.
REMARKABLE UPTAKE
E-commerce growth has been slow and this is attributed to lack of accessible and secure payment systems.
Safaricom is counting on the large number of customers using M-Pesa to take on competitors such as Pesapal.
With Lipa na Mpesa online, developed by Safaricom and Tangazoletu Ltd, customers would buy goods without paying any transaction fee.
Emergence of online shopping sites such as OLX, N-soko, Rupu, Bid or Buy, Jumia, and Cheki has boosted the infant businesses.
