Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has been praised for calling into order the crowd at the memorial service for former president Nelson Mandela at FNB Stadium, in Soweto. Madiba passed away peacefully in the company of his family at his Houghton home last Thursday at the age of 95.
Sections of the crowd were continuously being disruptive during the proceedings and some even booed president Jacob Zuma whenever the camera focussed on his face.
Despite constant requests for discipline and silence by chair of the service Cyril Ramaphosa, crowds could be heard singing non-stop. However when an angry Tutu took to the stage the crowd eventually calmed down.
"I want to show the world we can come out here and celebrate the life of an icon, you must show the world that we are disciplined. I want to hear a pin drop," says Tutu.
The booing incident quickly attracted criticism on social with many claiming to be embarrassed by the crowds’ behaviour in front of many international dignitaries and heads of states.
