Steven Gerrard scored a last-minute penalty to secure three precious points for Liverpool after Kolo Toure had threatened to derail their title charge with another howler.
Toure gifted Fulham the lead in the eighth minute when the veteran Liverpool defender inexplicably skewed Kieran Richardson's cross into his own net.
A few minutes later Toure charged into referee Phil Dowd and sent the Staffordshire official sprawling onto the turf.
Liverpool equalised just before half-time when Steven Gerrard's sublime pass released Daniel Sturridge and the slotted the ball past Maarten Stekelenburg.
Kieran Richardson put Fulham 2-1 ahead from close range in the 63rd minute but Philippe Coutinho equalised nine minutes later.
