One person was shot and seriously injured when gunmen hijacked a UN vehicle at Hagadera camp in Dadaab on Wednesday morning.

UNHCR deputy country representative Abel Mbilinyi said that the attack took place at around 8:30 a.m. and the injured official was airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment.

“One of our staff members was shot during the attack. However, as at now, no one is missing. Police have also recovered the vehicle about 40 kilometres from the place of the attack,” he said.

STOPPED OPERATIONS

Two years ago, the UN refugee agency suspended non-essential operations at the refugee camp near the border with lawless Somalia following continuous attacks.

Elsewhere, two Administration Police officers were injured on Tuesday night when the vehicle they were travelling in was attacked by gunmen along the Maralal-Wamba road.

Police spokesperson Zipporah Mboroki said the officers were in a private car from Maralal to Isiolo when they were stopped by four men armed with an AK47 rifle and an M-16 rifle at Barsilinga.
