Tanganyika school to host Google in Education Summit for East Africa

THE International School of Tanganyika (IST) will host the upcoming Google in Education Summit for East Africa on the 1st and 2nd of March, this year, aimed at helping teachers to get the most out of Google Apps for the benefit of student learning.

IST Communications Manager, Ms Debra Backlund, said in a press statement on Monday that participants attending the conference will come from schools within Tanzania as well as other schools in Africa. Highlights of the event will include keynote talks from Sarah Woods and Ken Shelton. Ms Woods is the IT Director and a Secondary IT Integration Coach at Pechersk School International in Ukraine.

Mr Shelton teaches middle school technology and is an Apple Distinguished Educator and Google Certified Teacher. Other speakers at the event will include Ms Allison Mollica, Mr Dan Taylor and Mr Derek Harwell who will conduct sessions on using Google Apps in education including Google Drive, Docs, Calendars and Spreadsheets. “This is an important event for teachers, lecturers, school administrators and school IT managers.

The opportunity to learn in person from the experts at Google Apps doesn’t come often. AppsEvents is a good initiative to help educators expand their knowledge of cloud computing,” said Mr Harish Bhatt, Chair of IST’s Board and Managing Director of Soft-Tech Consultants Ltd. AppsEvents conducts Google in Education Summits worldwide. This is their second summit in Africa with the first summit having been held in Senegal in January of this year.

“We were looking forward to hosting the Google for Education Summit. It is an honour to be able to welcome educators not only from Tanzania but from other countries in Africa to attend this practical and informative event,” added Mr Martin Hall, IST Director.
