Social-networking giant Facebook has unveiled a plan to use drones and satellites to provide Internet access to people in remote areas of the world.
Company officials said on Thursday that they have set up a team for the project. Members include aviation and communication experts from NASA and a British drone manufacturer.
The team is already developing solar-powered drones capable of long flights. It is also studying new communication technology that uses infrared rays and forms of light.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says he aims to make basic Internet services available to people all around the world.
Another US IT giant, Google, is developing a system using balloons to provide Internet services.
