Gerrard: Thrashing United 4-1 at Old Trafford was the best Liverpool away performance I've ever been a part of

When Steven Gerrard leads his team out at Old Trafford on Sunday, he’ll be reminded of a performance that he hails as one of Liverpool’s very best.

In fact the Anfield skipper would go as far as to say the 4-1 win over Manchester United in March 2009, was the Reds best away performance in his time at the club.

'It’s one of the most difficult games of the season, especially with the rivalry that’s between Liverpool and Manchester United, so to go there and win 4-1 and completely dominate them was fantastic.

'I would have to say it’s the best Liverpool performance, on the road, that I’ve been a part of.' That result was made even sweeter for Gerrard, by getting his name on the score sheet in a game remembered for a vintage display from the captain and then team-mate Fernando Torres.

'We went a goal down, but everyone was on such form that day we found a way back in and controlled from that point on.  Obviously I enjoyed scoring myself, and I remember Fernando Torres having a great game, he was unplayable that day'.

Ironically that victory was the last time Liverpool were seriously involved in a title race – one they ultimately lost to United – now five years on Gerrard, in his new deep-lying midfield role, has been one of the clubs stand-out stars in their bid to win Anfield’s first title since 1991.

He along with the SAS of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge will no doubt be on shortlists for when the individual awards are handed out, but for Gerrard the firm goal is team accolades.

'Ever since I was a young lad it’s been about trying to get medals for the team, and I’m no different now. Winning cups, trying to get into the Champions League and now chasing the league title is what it’s all about.

'If individual awards come along it tells you you’re doing your job right, and helping the team, but they are bonuses really.'

For Gerrard a title medal would be the icing on the cake in a Anfield career that has seen him win everything else on offer and clock-up nearly seven hundred appearances, a record that he’s extremely proud of.

'When I made my debut I thought I’d be lucky to make 100 appearances, when you’re at a club like Liverpool you have to take each game and each performance at a time.

'Now I just hope there’s a few more before I think about the next step in my career'.
