PLAYER RATINGS: Old foe Robben gives United the runaround at Old Trafford

Bayern Munich fought back to claim a 1-1 draw against Manchester United in the Champions League quarter-final first leg after Nemanja Vidic had earlier headed the hosts in front. CHRIS WHEELER gives his ratings from Old Trafford.

MANCHESTER UNITED

David De Gea - 6

Great diving save to deny Robben in first half and couldn't be faulted for the equaliser.

Phil Jones - 6.5

Got off to a torrid start against Ribery but grew into the game and imposed himself.

Alexander Buttner - 6

Had his hands full against fellow Dutchman Robben and survived handball claim.

Michael Carrick - 6.5

Some excellent passes but struggled to keep track of Bayern's roving midfield.

Rio Ferdinand - 6.5

Rose to the occasion and timely interceptions to deny Mueller in particular.

Nemanja Vidic - 7

Captain's performance in his second game in four days after injury, and came up with the goal.

Marouane Fellaini - 4.5

Looked out of his depth at times and didn't pick up his man for the equaliser

Ryan Giggs - 5

Asking too much to have same impact as Olympiacos win and subbed at half-time

Wayne Rooney - 6.5

Best bet for a creative spark and supplied corner for Vidic's goal.

Antonio Valencia - 6

Lively down the right. Harshly booked but then lucky to escape a red.

Danny Welbeck - 7.5

Guilty of wasting best chance of the first half but ran Martinez ragged.

Ashley Young (on for Buttner 74mins) - 6

Shinji Kagawa (on for Giggs 46mins) - 6

MANAGER: David Moyes – 7

Had to try and contain Bayern and it nearly resulted in a famous victory.

BAYERN MUNICH

Manuel Neuer - 7

Crucial save from Welbeck but could do little about Vidic's goal from a corner.

Rafinha - 6.5

Almost caught out dithering early on but settled well after that.

David Alaba - 6.5

Spent as much time in United box as his own but made valuable blocks on Valencia and Rooney.

Bastian Schweinsteiger - 7

Got forward to snatch a crucial away goal but sent off late on for second yellow card.

Javi Martinez - 4.5

Played out of position at centre-back and it looked like it at times.

Jerome Boateng - 5.5

Former City defender seemed vulnerable whenever United threatened.

Arjen Robben - 8

An old adversary but still giving United the runaround after all these years.

Philipp Lahm - 6

He has prospered in a midfield role this season but was a little less effective here.

Thomas Mueller - 6

Didn't have as many chances as he might have expected and subbed.

Toni Kroos - 6

United target made a lot of passes without ever really opening them up.

Franck Ribery - 6.5

Fast out of the blocks but faded slightly as game progressed.

His European champions did not dominate to the extent many expected.
