Real Madrid will travel to Germany with a 1-0 lead after coming out on top in their Champions League semi-final first leg.

Karim Benzema couldn't miss when he was played in by Fabio Coentrao and Madrid will travel to Germany a goal to the good.

REAL MADRID

Iker Casillas - 7

Had command of his penalty area and made one excellent save to keep Mario Gotze at bay. Justified his selection with Diego Lopez on the bench.

Daniel Carvajal - 6

Was on the back foot for most of the game but dealt well enough with Franck Ribery who didn't get a sniff before being replaced.

Wild: Sergio Ramos was solid enough in defence while Pepe had to come off injured

Wild: Sergio Ramos was solid enough in defence while Pepe had to come off injured

Sergio Ramos - 7

His usual boisterous self giving Bayern little chance when the ball was hoicked into the box. Will come under more pressure next week at the Allianz Area.

Pepe - 7

Frustrating to watch when he stays on the floor for little contact but was effective at the heart of the defence. Had to come off in the second half with a real leg injury but should be back for next Tuesday's second leg.

Fabio Coentrao - 6.5

It's never easy with Arjen Robben baring down on you over and over again, but he did all that could be asked. Set up Karim Benzema's goal with a good run around the back of Jerome Boateng.

Under pressure: Luka Modric was forced to do plenty of running as Real chased the ball

Luka Modric - 7

Had to do far more work off the ball than on it but is able to start swift counter attacks as effectively as anyone in the world currently.

Xabi Alonso - 6.5

Again, he didn't get his foot on the ball as much as he would like and his slight defensive fragility showed in the second half when Bayern charged up the other end of the pitch after pinching the ball off him. However, Alonso's 60-yard run to try and retrieve it showed his desire and commitment.

Angel di Maria - 5.5

After some terrific performances of late much was expected from the Argentine but he struggled to get into the game. Missed a wonderful opportunity to double Real's lead when he blazed over from close range.

Isco - 6

Was forced to play on the left wing for most of the game and track back which he wasn't too comfortable with. Stylish on the ball but wouldn't have started if Gareth Bale was fully fit.

Cool finish: Karim Benzema scored the first goal for Real Madrid midway through the first half

Karim Benzema - 7.5

Real's match winner and the coolest man in front of goal. The Frenchman has upped his game this season and his work-rate was top class all through the game. Man of the match.

Cristiano Ronaldo - 7

Will be kicking himself for missing a golden chance to score in the first half but was always involved in Madrid's deadly counter attacks. All eyes are glued to him whenever he gets his dancing feet on the ball.

Anguish: Cristiano Ronaldo missed a fantastic chance to double Madrid's lead

BAYERN MUNICH

Manuel Neuer - 7

The most solid keeper in Europe and he made no mistakes at the Bernabeu. The German couldn't do anything about Benzema's goal and put off Di Maria enough to make the Argentine miss his glorious chance.

Rafinha - 5

Not expected to start but was put into the side to allow Philipp Lahm into midfield. An obvious weak link and was replaced by Javi Martinez soon into the second half.

Jerome Boateng - 6

Still as unconvincing as ever. Coentrao ghosted past him to find space and the cross resulted in Real's goal. Every team that play Bayern will target him.

Good enough? Former Manchester City defender Jerome Boateng couldn't prevent Real from scoring

Dante - 6

The Brazilian didn't let anyone beat him regularly in the air and used it nicely on the ground but he is nothing spectacular. May struggle if a fit Bale and Ronaldo run repeatedly at him.

David Alaba - 6

Allowed the ball to slide past him for the goal and was out of position when Di Maria should have scored. Too focused on attack instead of his defensive duties.

Philipp Lahm - 7

Is an extremely proficient central midfielder and he kept the ball well at the Bernabeu. Not a creative genius in that position but ticks the boxes Pep Guardiola wants. Had to move back to right back though when Martinez came on.

Running the show: Bayern captain Philipp Lahm played alongside Bastian Schweinsteiger in the midfield

Bastian Schweinsteiger - 6

Played in a more advanced role than he would have liked and his influence was cut accordingly. With Lahm in the midfield play went through the captain more than Schweinsteiger.

Arjen Robben - 6.5

Has seen better European nights in a Bayern shirt but was their most dangerous threat going forward. Only player for the Germans who injected real pace into their play.

Toni Kroos - 6

Switch the play well and looked for the killer ball but it didn't happen for him on Wednesday. May be lucky to keep his place in Munich.

Franck Ribery - 5

Hasn't had a game as ineffectual as this in a long time. Barely touched the ball and was doubled up on when he did. Guardiola was justified when he brought him off.

Mario Mandzukic - 6

Toiled and tried to put his weight about but you can imagine the club will be happy they have Robert Lewandowski coming in for next season. Good, but not great.
