A car explosion at the funeral of a Libyan military intelligence officer has killed one and injured six others, security officials say.

The blast took place at a cemetery in the eastern city of Benghazi on Sunday, Xinhua reported.

"A Toyota pickup parked in the car lot at the Hawari cemetery exploded Sunday afternoon during the end of the funeral of military intelligence colonel, Kamal Bzazh, as the mourners were leaving," Spokesperson for Benghazi joint security room Ibrahim Sharaa said.

The causes of the explosion remained unclear but Sharaa said the car had been parked near a vehicle belonging to Benghazi security director Colonel Saleh Lawati.

The official added that many of those taking part in the funeral were leaders of the national security directorate.

Kamal Bzazh, the head of the Islamic affairs department in the national security directorate of Benghazi, died early on Sunday after sustaining serious injuries by the explosion of a bomb planted underneath his car on Saturday.
