Minister in the Presidency, Collins Chabane, says leaders from around the world are preparing to travel to South Africa, with 13 African States confirming attendance already. Senior leaders at the UN, European Commission and African Union will also attend.
US President Barack Obama and his wife, as well as three former US presidents will be arriving in South Africa. Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has also confirmed her attendance.
Speaking at a media conference at the SABC in Johannesburg, Chabane says government is heartened by the emotion and celebration that's been exhibited at today's official day of prayer that's been recognised around the country.
He says the official Nelson Mandela memorial service at FNB Stadium on Tuesday will take place at 11a.m in the morning with gates opening at 6 a.m. President Jacob Zuma will address the service.
“This is an international event that will be attended by members of the public alongside national and international leaders. The programme will also include tributes by Heads of State from the various regions of the globe, the continent and representatives of international and regional organisations."
Chabane says all key events are being broadcast live. Provincial and local authorities have been requested to arrange transport for mourners from various parts of the country to FNB Stadium and the overflow venues at Ellis Park Stadium. "Big screens will be installed at the overflow venues to allow members of the public to follow proceedings at FNB Stadium in the company of compatriots.”
