Former President Nelson Mandela's eldest daughter, Makaziwe, says she sees her role as one of unifying her family after Madiba's funeral. She was speaking to the SABC at the Mandela family home in Qunu on Friday.
Madiba's daughter with his late first wife Evelyn says despite all their differences she will have to work to unite her family.
Recently family members were at loggerheads over Madiba's final resting place. At the heart of the legal challenge was the removal of the remains of some of Madiba's children from the family graveyard in Qunu to Mvezo, where Chief Mandla Mandela lives.
Sixteen family members including Makaziwe won that court challenge forcing Mandla to return the remains to Qunu. Makaziwe she will have to work hard to unite her family.
“I have to try and pull this family together. We might have our differences or difficulties, but in essence, one has to swallow one’s pride.
You know Tata always talked about forgiveness, and so, that’s the spirit that I have to try and cultivate in this family. During this sad period we all have to pull together and hold each other’s hands and we have to unite and be able to forgive each other.”
