In advance of Nelson Mandela’s funeral service on Sunday in Qunu, South Africa, the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Reverend Mpho Tutu, the first female Irish president, Mary Robinson, and Sir Richard Branson are comeing together for a digital eulogy using Google+ Hangouts.
The conversation will be hosted by Peace Jam and The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, and moderated by CNN’s Anderson Cooper.
The One Billion Acts of Peace project and The Nelson Mandela Foundation will host the virtual conversation between the spiritual leader and Tutu as they share what Madiba's life meant to them personally.
The Dalai Lama has been haunted by controversy when it comes to South Africa and has been denied a visa to the country twice. In 2011 he was invited to present a lecture on the occasion of Nelson Mandela’s 80th birthday, but could not enter the country. He then reverted to an online discussion with Tutu, also via Google hangouts.
The Dalai Lama has said he will not be attending Madiba’s memorial service or funeral, but has not given specific reasons for this.
The public can ask questions of the participants with #MandelaTribute.
