Malema faces charges of negligent and reckless driving and exceeding the general speed limit.(SABC)
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema, has apologised for reckless driving as he appeared before the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate's Court on Friday.
He was nabbed by traffic police on Thursday night for driving at 215km per hour in a 120km zone. Malema was on his way to Alexandra in Johannesburg from Bloemfontein in the Free State.
His supporters outside the court pledged their continuous support to the EFF leader.
Last month, Malema appeared before the Polokwane High Court for fraud and corruption. Now he faces charges of negligent and reckless driving and exceeding the general speed limit.
Malema was detained at a police station for eight hours after his arrest and released around 3am after paying R5000 bail.
With the country's spotlight on road safety, traffic authorities say behaviour similar to that of Malema simply won't be tolerated.
The EFF has since issued a statement declaring that Malema has apologised, blaming the speeding to a tight schedule as he claims he literally had to be in three provinces at the same time.
Malema was arrested by the high speed unit in the Vaal on the N1 and was charged with reckless and negligent driving and for exceeding the general speed limit.
