President Jacob Zuma says one of the ways to preserve former President Nelson Mandela's legacy is community development through sport.

He was speaking at the Jacob Zuma soccer tournament at Eshowe. Zuma was accompanied by South African Football Association (Safa) president Danny Jordaan, mining magnate and Sundowns owner Patrice Motsepe and KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Sports and Recreation Ntombikayise Sibhidla Saphetha.

Zuma says soccer and other sports can be used to bring about peace among communities.

"The motive is to organise young people to develop and encourage young people to develop talent. If we do this in the name of Mandela, we will be following his footsteps. It's a better way of remembering and honouring him."

Meanwhile, Motsepe has set aside R200 million to develop soccer and other sport. Motsepe has encouraged other businesses to participate in uplifting rural communities.

"At the heart of this is the promotion and development of football in areas like these, in rural areas where many poor reside. We encourage all our youngsters to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams.

Education goes hand in hand with soccer. So, the Motsepe family has earmarked R200 million," said Motsepe.
