DIGITIZATION OF EAC INFORMATION RESOURCES IN THE PIPELINE

A validation workshop on modalities for digitization of EAC information resources is set to be convened from 13th-14th February 2014 in Nairobi; Kenya. The workshop aims to undertake a study on the digitization of information as a resource for the Community.

The study is a continuity of Library initiatives to streamline the EAC information resources in a structured manner in all its Organs and Institutions. This initiative is in line with Article 71 of the Treaty which states the responsibility of the Secretariat to promote and disseminate information on the Community to the stakeholders, the general public and the international Community as an effort to preserve EAC information and harmonize it for effective dissemination.

Currently, information is scattered around EAC’s Organs and Institutions such as the legal, information and public relations, libraries, registries, archives and in offices as opposed to a well-organized data storage system. It is also not effectively shared internally neither is it effectively disseminated to the public.

Drawing from the integration process, a lot of information has continued to be generated that is of great educational, economic as well as historic value. Such information material include EAC reports; published or non-published, maps, books, recordings, films, prints, photographs, architectural drawings, databases and other types of primary sources of data, depicting various integration processes from negotiations to protocols to information from EALA and EACJ including the hansards, court cases and judgments.

In a bid to strengthen and streamline such information resources, a number of initiatives have been undertaken such as the Information Communications Project funded by DFID and the establishment of the library and documentation centre.
Among the expected outputs of the study is an inception report, a draft on modalities for digitizing EAC information resources, a report of the stakeholders’ validation workshop and a final draft report planned for submission.
EAC Organs and Institutions namely the Secretariat, EALA and EACJ  LVBC, LVFO, IUCEA and CASSOA; will be meeting tomorrow to validate the draft report on modalities for digitizing EAC information resources and consequently outline a report
