Ordinary South Africans will be given an opportunity to personally bid Madiba farewell from Wednesday till Friday next week. But cellphones and cameras have been barred at the Union buildings during the public viewing of former president Nelson Mandela's body.
"Mourners are advised that cellphones and cameras will not be allowed at the union buildings and mourners are advised not to bring cameras and cellphones in their possession," says Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane.
People are encouraged to form an informal guard of honour along the route between No One Military Hospital and the Union Buildings where Madiba's cortege will pass daily or catch a shuttle to the Union Buildings to view the body. It is yet to be determined whether Madiba's casket will be open or not.
Chabane says members of the public wishing to pay their final respects will be shuttled to the union buildings from two central venues in Tshwane that will be announced in due course only mourners who report to these venues will be allowed to visit the Union buildings and view the remains.
Chabane has also requested provincial authorities to coordinate provincial and help secure transport for mourners wishing to attend memorial service for the former president Nelson Mandela at the FNB Stadium, near Soweto on Tuesday.
Chabane says the event will also be attended by diplomatic corps including heads of state. He says government is in the process of briefing the diplomatic corps on Saturday, to facilitate the attendance of the visiting leaders.
He announced that the following routes and interchanges near the venues will be closed and controlled by law enforcement agencies. The N1 road and Rand show road, the N1 and Soweto Highway, the N1 and N17, the N17 and Nasrec off ramp, the Green wood road and Booysens reserves, the Nasrec road and Main Reef roads.
